Accommodation in Bougainville varies in terms of standards and expense. The majority of the accommodation venues are located in Buka and Arawa.
Buka features a number of small guest houses, self contained units and small hotels. However, due to demand for accommodation exceeding supply, the cost of some of the accommodation in Buka is expensive considering the standard of facilities and the cost of similar accommodation in Australia.
Outside Buka, guest houses throughout Bougainville are relatively good value, often including meals as part of the room charge. However, the facilities are often basic and in need of maintenance.
Village stays can be arranged but often only through a well connected local and after negotiation with the village chiefs.
Payment will generally be required in cash, in PNG Kina, the currency of PNG. Hardly any accommodation establishments accept credit cards and if they do, it is not unusual to find that the machine required to process the sale is inoperative.
